The Best Long-Sleeve T-Shirts

Taylor Stitch hemp long-sleeve t-shirt

It’s officially autumn—let the layering commence. But while there's always talk of swapping out our polos and tropical shirts for something more substantial, there's never any talk about what's underneath. I'm here to sing the praises of the long-sleeve tee. The easygoing knit shirt makes for an ideal cover for transitional weather when breezy evenings are still too warm for sweaters but a touch too chilly for short-sleeves. I wear long-sleeve tees year-round because I run cold almost all the time. But it's always the perfect weighted top for your WFH wardrobe (or casual in-person office fits).

An essential for everyone's wardrobe, you can wear them with shorts, jeans or chinos, and even dress them up a bit with suits. If you're going to wear it by itself, you should size up as this type of silhouette looks better when it's more relaxed. If you're going to layer with an unstructured blazer or overshirt, then your usual size will do. Think of them as lightweight sweatshirts and wear them like your go-to crewneck. Whenever styling these, feel free to let them hang over your wrist, or if you're cooking dinner for the evening, don't be afraid to push them up.

For me, the ideal long-sleeve T-shirt has a structured neckline and borderline mock-neck that stays on the neck, even after washing. Another detail is a finished hemline at the waist, so it rests just below your belt, and ribbed sleeves at the wrists are a must if you're going to wear this fitted—if you're sporting an oversized look, then a raw-edged wrist works even better for a nonchalant style. With all the different options out there, we've selected a few to help guide you in the right direction. Take your pick.

An All-Season Sweater

Meriggi crewneck sweater

I first came across Meriggi when I was putting together this year’s swim shorts round-up and was able to try a pair out later on. The swim shorts are perfect for any holiday and double as a great pair of shorts whenever you’re not in the water, which explains the name, Meriggi, derived from an Italian expression, Meriggiare: To rest midday in the shade. The brand’s ethos is that they make resort wear with the Mediterranean in mind and that the clothing they create doesn’t change by the season but gets better with age.

Meriggi crewneck sweater

Recently, the brand launched an all-season sweater, and I was excited to try it since I’m a sucker for knitwear and thought it would be the perfect piece to layer with for the colder months ahead. I know what you’re thinking, a brand that started with swimwear is now making a sweater? But hear me out. They designed this sweater to be worn year-round—“evening summer boat ride” was the exact occasion that drove the concept—so it's perfect from Summer through Winter. The crewneck knit is made from soft, luxurious Italian cotton that features thick ribbing around the wrists and collar for a better fit.

I went with the cream-colored sweater, which is a risky move when one has a child in the house, but it goes with everything and looks clean with a pair of relaxed-fitting chinos and beat-up navy-blue canvas sneakers. The fit is spot-on, so take your usual size. With a reinforced ribbed collar, this won’t stretch after each wear; however, only wear this with a T-shirt underneath—if you want to pair with an oxford cloth button-down, then you may want to size up. Whenever I washed it, I did so with my hands in the bathtub with cold water and light detergent. Once I was done, I let it air dry on a drying rack (never on a hanger since it’ll stretch out the neckline and shoulders).Meriggi intended this sweater to be an all-season staple, and I’d say they nailed it. From the versatility of wearing it with shorts, denim, chinos and a suit, to the competitive price-point, there’s a lot to like about this wear-anywhere sweater. There are many great sweater brands on the market that charge double, even triple, the price. I’ve been eyeing this one from Ghiaia for a while now, but can’t justify myself pulling the trigger. Meriggi’s sweater scratches that itch and leaves me enough money to buy the navy blue one to add to my ever-expanding sweater collection.
