Jake Gyllenhaal in Nocturnal Animals
Tom Ford has made just two feature films since he began dabbling in Hollywood, but they are some of the most stylish movies in cinematic history. No big surprise, of course—everything the man does is tastefully done. Perhaps that’s why I remember the costume design, cinematography and overall vibe of the movie more than I remember the actual plot.
But Fall is a great time to revisit Ford’s eerie psychological thriller, Nocturnal Animals. Based on the novel Tony and Susan by Austin Wright, it’s the story of a glamorous Los Angeles art gallerist (Amy Adams), whose perfect life is blemished by the arrival of a disturbing manuscript written by her ex-husband (Jake Gyllenhaal), who she has not seen in years. The manuscript tells the story of a teacher (also played by Gyllenhaal) who finds a roadtrip with his family turning into a nightmare. As Susan reads the book, it forces her to examine her past and tackle some dark, uncomfortable truths.
In an interview that came out around the same time as the movie, costume designer Arianne Phillips said that no one in the movie wore clothes from Tom Ford or any other designer. Gyllenhaal’s character (in the film-within-a-film) is also a writer. And while his look is accessible, it’s also got an air of sophistication. Yes, it’s a cozy flannel, but he keeps it tucked into five-pocket pants and finishes it off with a proper belt, some trusty chukkas and a Rolex Datejust—who says writing doesn’t pay well?
