Wear This Over Everything
Whatever you call it—an overshirt, shirt jacket or shacket—now is its time to shine. I don’t want it to seem like I’m rushing the season, I know we are approaching fall but it’s still plenty warm out. However, between now and the arrival of true autumn weather, we exist in the sweet spot for lightweight outerwear. You know, that annoying phase of cool mornings, blazing hot sun throughout the day, followed by an evening chill. Embrace the shirt jacket and you’ll set all day.
Because the temperatures fluctuate so much this time of year, you want something that can be light enough to throw over anything yet substantial enough to provide some actual insulation. I’m always cold, so I’ve got an overshirt with me year-round, and I’ll pull it on with my chinos, or some jeans and a T-shirt, and even with my shorts. It’s meant to be the “just in case” piece you throw on if there’s the slightest chill. Plus, it has a unique way of finishing any outfit.
There are tons of affordable and investment-worthy overshirts in range of weights, fits and fabrics. You need to decide how cool or warm you run personally, to decide which one would suit you best. We’ve rounded up some stylish options that can keep you warm and looking cool while in the office or layered for those evening strolls.

This line was a long time coming. Jack Carlson, the founder of Rowing Blazers, has teamed up with another designer, Karl Blanchard, to launch a label in honor of tennis legend Arthur Ashe. The two worked with his estate to create a line featuring both archival replicas and new pieces inspired by his on- and off-court style. This leopard-print piqué polo ($98) is the perfect example. What’s more, a portion of all proceeds are split between the UCLA's Arthur Ashe Legacy Fund and the Social Change Fund United, two organizations the estate still supports to this day.

High-Waisted Canvas “Jeans”
North Carolina is known for basketball, tobacco and one of the all time great TV shows, The Andy Griffith Show. But for menswear nerds, the state is also known for its denim. Cone Mills’ denim mill in Greensboro, North Carolina, (named White Oak) closed back in 2017 after more than a century in business. Raleigh Denim was one of the many denim brands that used this factory for production. Based out of Raleigh, North Carolina, the denim brand has been making high-quality jeans since 2007. It seems like they are flying slightly under the radar right now since selvedge jeans have quietly been on the back burner for the pre-washed style of late. However, they are still making some of the best denim in the game today.
Yes, their denim is quite pricey, but you’re getting a pair of top-notch jeans that are limited-edition and truly special. Each pair is hand-stamped with the exact number made and finished with authentic chain-stitching for added durability. I just received the Rowan Japanese canvas pant, and I got number 55 out of 64. Pulling them on, you notice the pants are cut from a substainial textured canvas, but the fabric is still light enough to wear in warmer temperatures. While I’ve only washed them once so far, they’re already getting a bit softer.
The higher waist may take some getting used to, especially for those who haven’t experimented with them before. But there’s an offset belt loop that keeps the fabric from pushing up against your back (a much-appreciated added benefit). They’re a bit roomier than your usual 501s—relaxed in the seat and thigh area with a clean, straight fit.
In terms of sizing, I got my normal size 30, and they fit perfectly. However, the inseam length is about 34-35 inches, so be sure you take these to a tailor to have them hemmed. That’s what I did to ensure they fall perfectly without any cuffing. Don’t worry, just ask your tailor to retain the original chain-stitched hem. Raleigh Denim introduced the Rowan fit last year, but I’m confident that they’ll be around for the next few years since silhouettes are becoming more relaxed, and it truly is an old school fit that looks great with a single monk shoe, sneakers or a pair of well-worn boots.
