Checking in With … Todd Snyder

Todd Snyder

Todd Snyder debuted his eponymous brand back in 2011, and his signature style of sophisticated takes on classic American style took off immediately. With tours of duty at Polo Ralph Lauren, Gap and J.Crew, it’s safe to say that you’ve had some of his garments hanging in your closet for quite a while now. Most designers shy away from trying to be everything to everyone; however, Snyder embraces it. Whether you’re looking for a well-tailored suit, comfortable sweats, ethically made soaps or the latest L.L. Bean collaboration, his shop has it all. The formula must be working, too, since the brand keeps opening up new stores across the country (most recently, in Los Angeles and Washington, DC). We caught up with Todd to see how his customers have evolved over the years, some current staff favorites and why he chose to save menswear’s beloved Liquor Store.

What items are you guys most excited about at the moment in the shop?

This season is all about luxe fabrics and silhouettes. My collection sources proprietary fabrics and yarns from around the world … Portuguese linen, Italian cotton and Japanese rayon. We use them in relaxed tailored suits and sportcoats, our famous sweater polos, and a range of summer-ready shirting this season. But there are also some rustic textures—everything from dobby and Ikat prints, while throwing in some macrame too.

How has the “Todd Snyder” customer evolved?

Our customer has always looked to present themselves to the world in stylish, luxe but unexpected ways. As we expand, we see the “World of Todd Snyder” continue to resonate with our existing guys, but also leave a lasting impression on our new customers.

What have customers been wearing lately?

Right now, they’re coming in with our Italian riviera sweater polo, the gurkha trouser and of course our Madison suit in seasonal fabrics.

You recently released a collaboration with Vans—any more summer or early fall partnerships?

Partnering with best-in-class brands from all over the world will always be an important part of my brand. While I can't reveal anything yet, we have some exciting and major drops planned heading into fall.

What are some current staff favorites?

With the warm weather finally here, we've seen the team pull out their favorite new go-to pieces of the season, and everything linen seems to be the staff favorite, especially the linen Madison sport coat, beach sweater and linen tee. Aside from clothing, the team loves Rubinacci loafers and our new collection of nomad sandals and espadrilles.

You've been opening new shops recently—how do you make each store feel unique to its location?

I've always felt that the best shops are the ones with the best edited and most unexpected collections, the perfect mix of classic go-to's and discoveries to keep you coming back. That is just one-half of the equation. The key to our current success, aside from our teams and product, is we pick locations that allow the brand to easily immerse into the fabric of the neighborhood and the routines of its residents.

What inspires the styling behind each collection?

When designing this collection, I looked at photographs from the 1950s of Tangiers and was inspired by the way the American ex-pats mixed their gentleman's clothes with bohemian ones. I am fortunate enough to work with Jim Moore, GQ's Editor at Large, to help bring my collections and the styling vision to life.

What special place does the Liquor Store have in the pantheon of the menswear zeitgeist?

When I first realized the overwhelming success of The Liquor Store at J.Crew, I knew it was time for me to take a risk and go out on my own. In 2019, I had a full circle moment when I had the chance to acquire the shop again under my name. Today, Todd Snyder at The Liquor Store remains a cult-favorite destination for menswear enthusiasts and remains one of my proudest career moments.
