Gianni Versace's '90s Style

Gianni Versace

A few years ago, I watched The Assassination of Gianni Versace-American Crime Story on FX and it led me into a deep dive into the designer’s style. A man known for his bold and extravagant prints often dressed in muted, neutral tones. I believe he did so to allow his work to stand out, along with the models sporting his latest textiles and patterns. One of my favorite looks from the designer was of him with his sister Donatella attending a fragrance launch party in the spring of ‘96.A look that’s 27 years old seems even more relevant today. Gianni’s outfit is a masterclass in mixing browns, blacks and greys—colors that aren’t often worn together, but when done right, it looks decidedly cool and intentional. The fit of his leather blazer is key—it hits near his thigh, giving the jacket a more workwear look, almost like an oversized chore coat. The T-shirt complements the blazer perfectly because the reinforced neckline looks dressier this way. The charcoal grey pants and suede loafers go well together because the pants are straight-fit, and the loafers have a thick black outsole that pulls it all together. We’ve found some pieces that bring the vibe but thankfully don’t cost nearly as much as his fit here. This photo also proves that great taste beats father-time.
