Robert de Niro in Goodfellas
It’s not where you’d think to find holiday style inspiration, but one film that gets formalwear right every time is Goodfellas. Besides pulling snapshots of what each character is wearing, you can also learn how to finely mince garlic and IYKYK (please use an actual knife). If you haven’t seen it yet, watch it over your holiday break—just maybe not with the family.
James “Jimmy the Gent” Conway is played by Robert de Niro—his character was a crooked mobster who was usually sent for reinforcement if someone was late on a payment. His outfit caught my attention, especially during the Christmas scene whenever all the gangsters spoiled their wives and were having drinks at the bar. Jimmy sports a brown blazer with generous lapels as opposed to the ridiculously skinny lapels seen a few years ago. It's great to see guys in more relaxed tailoring today, and this movie portrays years from 1955-1980, so this lapel fits right in. Underneath the blazer is a crisp white poplin. Wear it like Jimmy does but also with everything else—an ironed white button-down can open doors for you, literally. The accessories that Jimmy has are top-notch as well—the pattern of the tie is classic East Coast prep and makes the outfit pop since the rest is neutral. And we can’t forget the golden zippo lying on top of his Marlboro cigs. This look can be easily duplicated today—especially during the holidays—for a date night, family night or even a new year’s party.
Madison sport coat, $698 by Todd Snyder; White cotton pocket poplin button-down shirt, $275 by Drake’s; Silk repp club tie, $125 by Polo Ralph Lauren and Hand stamped “mama tried” zippo, $55 by imogene + willie
