When was the last time you watched Rocky? All the movies are on Netflix right now, but for me, they just don’t hit the same without commercials.

Burgess Meredith in ‘Rocky’
I’ve been a fan of the Rocky saga ever since I was a kid. But I’ve recently revisited them as an adult, thanks to my son catching all the re-runs on AMC. When I was a kid, I cared about all the training and fighting scenes, much like my son does because they’re full of action. But seeing it now, I’ve grown a crazy appreciation for the soundtrack courtesy of Bill Conti’s orchestra and the unsung style hero of the entire saga—although he’s only in the first three—Rocky’s trainer, Mickey Goldmill.
Burgess Meredith played Mickey—the fiery trainer who complained about Rocky always fighting southpaw and famously said, “You’re going to eat lightning, and crap thunder.” Besides his hilarious quotes, Mickey had some of the best knitwear game in cinema history. A beanie tilted to the side was always his ringside signature. His most iconic fit was a fairly bold style move that’d be handy today since we’re in the depths of winter—a zip fleece underneath a cardigan with a cable-knit beanie. Sure, it’s a no-brainer to wear them separately, but pairing the two together has me re-evaluating my whole layering game.
Using this as style inspiration isn’t tough, but you should know your fabrics. Look for a cotton zip jacket that can serve as a mid-layering item, and the cardigan should be a V-neck style since you’ll already have a collar from the jacket underneath. The look also works well because Mickey’s stays in opaque tones that complement each other. That’s a style rule that can be applied to any outfit—simple is always the smart solution.
